TJ TempleTJ Temple MT, MBA is the CIO at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains, MO. TJ has worked with MEDITECH for the past 13 years in both support and implementation roles. The latest project for TJ and Ozarks Medical Center will be the consolidation of multiple EHR systems into the new MEDITECH EXPANSE platform. TJ currently serves on the MUSE Board of Directors as past chair.

Innovate and Engage to Become a High Reliability Organization

A health system with a goal to become an HRO (High Reliability Organization) that strives for Zero Harm and 100% Reliability is an organization that must commit resources at all levels in order to be successful. The Valley Health System has been working toward becoming an HRO for many years.

The process began with Service Excellence initiatives that led to Operational Efficiency initiatives that both kept the focus on doing the best for our patients, families, doctors and employees. The final leap is Zero Harm and 100% reliable services. Even though the HRO step represents the last 10% or 20% of the journey, these last efforts are the most challenging. All of the steps require significant organization-wide culture changes that must be maintained and enhanced.

In this session you will learn about Valley's journey and the specific HRO/Zero Harm/100% Reliability tools, techniques, and cultural educational efforts that are underway. The session will tie in examples related to the functionality and use of MEDITECH and other computer systems. The session will also focus on how patient safety is not just a clinical department responsibility, it is the entire organization's responsibility. The challenges of the last 20% of the journey require innovation and full engagement of all involved.

Eric CareyAs Vice President and CIO, Eric Carey is responsible for the Information Systems and Telecommunications services for the Valley Health System. This includes all services from infrastructure through to end-user customer service, via a 24x7 Service Desk. The department supports all buildings (over 60 locations), including all of the physician practice locations of the Valley Medical Group. The Valley Health System is a $700 million health system in northern New Jersey that includes The Valley Hospital, a 451-bed facility located in Ridgewood NJ, Valley Home Care and Hospice, and The Valley Medical Group, a 300+ member physician organization with locations throughout northern New Jersey and southern New York State.

Mr. Carey began at Valley in 1994 as the Manager of Application Development. He was later promoted to Director of Information Systems, and ultimately became VP/CIO in 2010. He has been a leader of the development the Information Systems department from a small group to a full service department of about 110 staff and leaders. Mr. Carey has been an active participant in many company-wide initiatives in order to make sure that the Information Systems and Telecommunications departments maintain high quality relationships with all of the customers throughout the Valley Health System.

Valley is part of the Jersey Health Connect regional Health Information Exchange and routinely partners with affiliated organizations to share data. Valley Information Systems has been recognized as a Most Wired health system for 16 consecutive years and earned HIMSS Stage 6 recognition in 2011. With the implementation of MEDITECH 6.x the team is now working on attaining HIMSS Stage 7 recognition.

Improving the Patient Experience

Our recent cultural transformation is due to our focus on customer service to improve the patient experience throughout our hospital and rural health clinic. Our mission is to be the provider of choice and employer of choice and, hopefully, to see our market share grow as we know our patients have a choice for their care. Our CEO’s guiding principle is to put patients first. Trying to change this hospital’s culture has been tough, but we understand the transformation is vital. So we keep pressing on.

Learn about our transformation, along with a specific example outlining our telehealth initiatives and how it will help drive improvements in care coordination, and thus, improve the patient experience as well.

Ismelda GarzaIsmelda Garza, CIO, joined Comanche County Medical Center in July, 2008 as their Systems Analyst for their overall implementation of the hospital’s Health Information System - MEDITECH. CCMC is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital in rural Texas. Her department supports two EMS locations, a Rural Health Clinic with nine providers, an assisted living center, and two Physical Therapy locations.

Ismelda’s current areas of responsibility include Information Technology, Clinical Informatics, Project Management, Telecommunications, Privacy and Security Management.

Eli LainhartEli Lainhart, IT Director, has been with Star Valley Medical Center (SVMC), a CAH located in Western Wyoming, since 2010. SVMC has been named a top 100 Critical Access Hospital seven times during those eight years. His tenure includes overseeing the 2013 conversion from paper records to MEDITECH 6.08, including migrating from a previous ambulatory system to MEDITECH’s MPM. Other projects of note include various telehealth projects with the Utah Telehealth Network and IHC telehealth. He is married with 5 children and his hobbies include reading, yardwork and spending time at the beach with his family. His most recent accomplishments include learning how to juggle and completing his Master’s Degree in Cyber Security and Information Assurance from Southern Utah University.

Improving Efficiency and Enhancing the Patient Experience in a Fragmented MEDITECH Environment

Horizon is a patient-centred organization and programs are being challenged to make patient-centred decisions. Therapeutic services identified a need to improve scheduling processes and staff efficiency. The initiative required modifications across different instances of MEDITECH Magic (5.67) and Client Server (5.67), process redesign, stakeholder engagement, and enhancing patient notifications in both official languages. This presentation will highlight the current environment, strategic insights and challenges, and provide a roadmap on how this can be expanded to other programs and services.

Sam Field Sam Fielding is the Chief Technology Officer with Horizon Health Network, a network of hospitals and healthcare facilities across New Brunswick, Canada. He has a healthcare leadership position that provides strategic technology guidance, manages the core technology prioritization process and is directly responsible for telecommunications and evolving mobile technologies. Sam also has a lead role in vendor negotiations and actively collaborates with other technology delivery partners including a provincial Shared Service Agency (Service New Brunswick), the Vitalité Health Network, and the Department of Health. Sam has a Master of Business Administration degree from the Université de Moncton and a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. He completed his undergraduate Business Administration degree at Acadia University.

Over the last 20 years, Sam has worked in various positions that started in transportation and logistics, before transitioning into project management, consulting, and healthcare delivery. Over the last 13 years, he has been actively involved in a range of initiatives involving Clinical Information System expansions, Service and Escalation Management, Telehealth Services, Email Systems, Patient Incident Management, PACS migrations, and Cyber Security.

OpenNotes in MyChart
Presenter: Denni McColm
Organization: Citizens Memorial Healthcare, Bolivar, Missouri

OpenNotes is an international movement to make health care more transparent. The movement urges care providers to invite patients to read the notes they write to describe a visit. The idea is to get everyone involved in the patient’s care on the same page. Studies show that patient engagement, including open notes, results in better outcomes, lower costs and a better patient care experience.

At Citizens Memorial Healthcare (CMH), they have opened their notes using the MEDITECH patient portal as a part of a broader patient engagement strategy. And, CMH didn’t stop with provider visit notes, they also make radiology reports, operative reports and more available to patients. We will discuss CMH’s open notes journey, some of the many stories of success related to open notes, dealing with provider concerns and the future extension of the model to even more types of care.

Denni McColmDenni McColm is Chief Information Officer for Citizens Memorial Healthcare. Denni has been at Citizens Memorial since 1988, serving as Director of Human Resources and Director of Finance before moving into the CIO role in June, 2003. Denni currently serves on the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) Health Information Technology Advisory Board (HITAC), on the National Advisory Board for the Health Record Bank Alliance and on the Missouri Hospital Association HIDI Data Committee. Denni participates on the American Hospital Association Health IT Network and Interoperability Advisory Group. Denni has served on numerous boards and committees in the past, including the KLAS Advisory Board, HIMSS Davies Awards of Excellence Organizational Selection Committee and on the Board of Directors for Medical Users Software Exchange (MUSE). Denni holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Increase Quality of Care Through Provider Outreach, Communication and Collaboration

With today’s concerns on costs of healthcare, how does a hospital increase provider to patient communication and increase the quality of care through innovation? Using MEDITECH and other tools, Parkview Medical Center has increased patient satisfaction (NRC Survey Scores) by increasing communication when the patient is discharged. Ensuring medication delivery and homecare, and provider communication services are only a few of the ways we have worked on improving the quality of care for our community. This presentation will provide insight into improving the way you drive quality throughout the continuum of care.

Jim HrubyJim Hruby is the Director Information Technology at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado, a standalone 350-bed community hospital serving southeastern Colorado. A graduate of the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Geophysical Engineering, Jim is a certified Lean Six Sigma Blackbelt and certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Before joining the healthcare industry, he managed technically complex projects for organizations like Schlumberger, Unisys, Quantum, Oracle, HP, and Trane.

Over the past five years at Parkview he has implemented a wide variety of systems. Jim manages the team of analysts responsible for leveraging these systems to drive continuous improvement while teaching Lean Six Sigma Black Belt classes to senior management and other healthcare organizations. As a speaker, Jim has been a regular presenter at national conferences, including the MUSE, as well as a range of vendor events for organizations like MEDITECH, Summit Healthcare, and others. Outside of work, Jim is active with many volunteer groups in Pueblo and his home town of Rye, Colorado. His work in healthcare -- and Parkview specifically -- is near and dear to his heart, as he nearly lost his father to blood clots after a back surgery last year but for the excellent care provided by an Interventional Radiologist.

Patient Engagement Through TeleHealth
