Learn about the cybersecurity threat landscape, and how Emanate Health managed a sophisticated attack. Topics to be discussed include lessons learned and how technology can mitigate such events.

Dan Nash is the Chief Information Officer for Emanate Health and has served in this position for the past five years, recently leading the successful implementation of MEDITECH Expanse across the Emanate Health’s continuum of care. He has over 30 years of experience working in healthcare information technology. Prior to this he held the position of California Regional Manager of the PMO for Providence Health, where he led the implementation of Epic for the Southern California hospitals.
Dan started his career as a statistician and database programmer supporting principal investigators and clinicians in geriatric research at Hebrew Senior Life in conjunction with Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, as well as leading the implementation and use of technology across Hebrew Senior Life’s continuum of care. Dan is a certified project manager and holds a master’s degree in business from Northeastern University and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Dayton.

Cybersecurity Response Planning

Cyber-attacks have become common in healthcare. Regardless the amount of security organizations have implemented, a well thought out and executable response plan is crucial to continued operations should the unthinkable occur. In preparation for an attack, Anderson has conducted multiple tabletop exercises with managers to learn what clinical teams need at the moment an attack occurs and what is need hours and days afterwards. Lessons learned from those exercises will be discussed as well as Anderson’s preparations and the journey we are taking to continually prepare for an attack.

Mike Ward is Chief of Information Technology for Anderson Healthcare, consisting of a 150-bed hospital, critical access hospital, rehab hospital, surgery center and 30+ clinics. Mike has been in the health IT industry for 25 years with the last 17 at Anderson. He is a HIMSS fellow and has held numerous certifications such as PMP, CPHIMS, Certified Computer Forensics Examiner, and Certified Ethical Hacker. Mike is a member of Infragard a non-profit organization serving as a public-private partnership between U.S. businesses, the FBI, and other federal agencies. In November of 2019, Anderson completed their migration from MEDITECH CS to Expanse.

MAAS Implementation

Learn about how Boone Health implemented MEDITECH Expanse MAAS while they were transitioning away from a health care system to be an independent organization. Topics to be discussed include Boone’s journey to independence, complexity of the overall project, Expanse MAAS implementation experience, and lessons learned.

Ken Woodward is the Chief Information Officer at Boone Health and has served in this position for two years. Prior to this, Ken held many IT positions at BJC Healthcare. Ken oversaw the IT transition of Boone Health to an independent health care system which was completed in April, 2021. Ken has over 30 years of IT experience with most of it in health care. Ken has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems and a Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia College.

Brenda Sexson is the Information Services Director at Boone Health and has served in this position for one year. Brenda oversaw the implementation of MEDITECH Expanse MAAS as well as several additional clinical applications. Brenda has over 30 years of health IT experience with 25 of that with BJC Healthcare. Brenda started her career in health care as a Medical Technologist at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Brenda has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Emporia State University, Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from University of Kansas, and a Masters of Healthcare Administration from Webster University.

Leah Farina oversees all aspects of the account management/customer experience, including support for U.S., Canada, and HCA (one of MEDITECH’S largest customers). She also leads the Implementation/Service team for Home Care/Hospice, and collaborates with the MEDITECH South Africa team as Executive Sponsor for the Aga Khan University Hospital, which is currently implementing MEDITECH Expanse in Kenya, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
Leah brings warmth, intellect, and professionalism to her role. She is well known for her understanding of today’s healthcare challenges and enjoys working closely with customers and talking with them about how their EHR technology can support clinician workflows and improve patient care delivery.
Ms. Farina’s interest in healthcare was sparked in college, when she studied healthcare management and policy at the University of New Hampshire. During that time, she also worked in the Registration and Emergency Departments at Melrose Wakefield Hospital, a MEDITECH customer. After witnessing how vital IT was to the process of getting patients promptly admitted and treated, she made the leap to working as an implementation specialist for MEDITECH in 1989.
Away from work, she maintains an active schedule with her husband, Doug, and their two children.

Joel Benware, Chief Information Officer, Samaritan Health System, Watertown, New York
Joel Benware FACHE, CHCIO, CPHIMS, CHC joined Samaritan Medical Center’s administrative team as Chief Information Officer (CIO) in March 2021. Before joining Samaritan, Benware worked in senior leadership roles at Northwestern Medical Center, St. Albans, VT, serving as Chief Information, Innovation and Compliance Officer between 2013-2019 and as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Compliance Officer since 2019. Prior to these roles, he worked as Chief Information Officer of Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone, NY, and Chief Technology Officer at the Albany College of Pharmacy. In these positions, he provided oversight of health information systems; planned, developed and optimized facility-wide electronic medical record rollouts; managed staffs of IT professionals, and ensured security and privacy best practices were in place.

He attained Fellowship status in with the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a Certified Healthcare Chief Information Officer and Certified in Healthcare Compliance.
